Questions & Answers

Q: Where are you located?

A: We are located just outside St.Albert, Alberta, Canada.  Click on this link for a map to our centre:  MAP


Q: Do you take non-aboriginals?

A: Yes, we welcome people of all backgrounds.


Q: Where can I get an application form?

A: The application forms are on this website under program or you can call 1-866-458-1884 and ask the receptionist to mail or fax you an application.


Q: How can I pay?

A: We accept cash, money orders, certified cheques and company cheques.


Q: When do I have to pay?

A: Full payment is required in order to be admitted to the facility unless you are funded by a government agency with which we have a written agreement for later payment.


Q: I can't pay for myself how do I get funding?

A: Poundmaker's Lodge can not fund clients.  There are resources available to you including government social services (human resources and employment), Some First Nations Bands, (please enquire with your band office).

“PLEASE NOTE: Indian and Northern Affairs does NOT fund our program. 


Q: Do I need a referral or can I refer myself?

A: A referral is not required but are a great help in locating funding, completing an application and medical.


Q: How long is treatment?

A: We have a 42-day treatment program with extensions available.  We also have a 14 day follow-up.


Q: Do I have to stay there all the time or can I go visit on the weekends etc?

A: Residents are required to remain at the centre for the full duration of their stay with earned passes allowed after the 2nd week of treatment on Sundays ONLY between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.


Q: Can I have visitors?

A: Visiting hours are Sundays from 1 to 6 p.m.  As well, individuals from the outside may attend the Thursday AA meeting which runs from 8 to 9 p.m, but they are not allowed to enter the treatment facility any earlier than 7:30 p.m. and must leave no later than 9:15 p.m.


Q: I am going to be 18 in a couple of months, can I come in now?

A:  No, we do not admit anyone under 18 years of age.


Q: What is the recommended time between treatment and returning for follow-up?

A: The recommended time is 3 months, although exceptions may be made.


Q: How much time will I have for one to ones with my Counselor?

 A: “Our treatment model is based on group therapy and we have recently changed our schedule to accommodate one on one counseling for 2007. 


Q: Is there a dress code?

A: Residents are expected to wear clean, neat and appropriate clothing at all times.  Among the items prohibited: shorts or skirts more than an inch above the knee or any clothing that promotes alcohol, drugs or gambling.  Tank tops may only be worn during recreation times.  No gang-identifying paraphernalia, such as scarves, bandanas, toques etc.  Staff have the final say on what is appropriate attire.


Q: Does Poundmaker's facilitate medical, dental and optical appointments.

A: Only on an emergency basis, it is expected that you will take care of these things prior to coming in for treatment.  If you have too many professional or medical appointments you may be asked to leaving and return once these things are settled.


Q: What happens if I don't like my roommate?

A: Staff will work with you to resolve issues and use this as a learning opportunity for both parties.


Q: Is it mandatory to attend cultural programming/ceremonies?

A: The Cultural component of our program is of significant importance.  You are required to attend pipe and smudge ceremonies, and have the option of attending the sweat lodge ceremonies.


Q: Is it possible to shorten my stay?

A: No, we have a 42 day program because we feel this is the minimum necessary to provide the highest quality of treatment.


Q: How much free time will I get?

A: Our program has a full schedule, beginning at 7 a.m. with breakfast and lights out at 11 p.m, so there is not a lot of free time.  Check the schedule for details: Schedule


Q: What types of things do you have for sale there?

A: We have hoodies, long sleeve t-shirts and short sleeve shirts for sale.  We also sell personal hygiene packs  for $5 (toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant etc).
